Gold Price Outlook: Bullion Set for Weekly Gain Ahead of US Jobs Data

Gold prices are heading for a modest weekly gain as investors await US jobs data for clues on the Federal Reserve’s September interest-rate decision.

Gold Holds Ground Ahead of US Payrolls Data

Gold prices remained largely stable on Friday and were on track for a modest weekly gain, as investors awaited the US nonfarm payrolls report for fresh signals on the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate path.

Spot gold was little changed at around $4,474.78 per ounce, while US gold futures for December delivery declined 0.4% to $4,521.40. Bullion had rebounded from a three-week low earlier in the week, supported by changing expectations around US monetary policy.

The jobs report is particularly important because stronger or weaker employment data could influence expectations for the Fed’s September policy meeting.

Waller Comments Boost Gold Sentiment

Gold received a significant boost after Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller indicated that he could support keeping interest rates unchanged this month if upcoming inflation data confirms that price pressures are easing.

Following his comments, traders reduced their expectations for a September rate hike. Gold gained more than 2% on Thursday as the dollar and bond yields weakened.

The relationship between interest rates and gold remains important. Since gold does not generate interest income, higher rates can reduce its appeal relative to interest-bearing assets, while expectations of lower or stable rates can support demand.

India and China Support Physical Gold Demand

The broader precious-metals market remains constructive, with Citi forecasting gold at $4,800 per ounce over the next three months and $5,000 over six to 12 months.

Lower prices have also encouraged buying interest in India, while investment flows continue to support gold consumption in China.

Markets will next focus on the US August inflation reports, with CPI and PPI data due next week. Together with the employment figures, these indicators could determine whether the Federal Reserve maintains its cautious approach or moves toward another rate increase.

For gold investors, the combination of US employment, inflation, Treasury yields and dollar movements is likely to remain the key driver of prices in the near term.
