Indian travellers visiting Sri Lanka can now make their local transportation more affordable, with a new offer providing a flat 20% discount on PickMe rides when payments are made through UPI. The initiative, announced by NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), is aimed at encouraging Indian tourists to use digital payments while reducing dependence on cash and currency exchange.
20% Discount on PickMe Rides
Under the offer, Indian tourists can receive a 20% discount on every eligible PickMe ride, with the discount capped at LKR 750 per ride. The initiative brings India’s UPI ecosystem further into everyday travel and transportation services in Sri Lanka.
The development builds on the existing partnership between India’s digital payments ecosystem and PickMe, Sri Lanka’s ride-hailing platform. PhonePe and PickMe had earlier enabled UPI-based payments for Indian travellers, allowing users to pay for rides without needing to carry Sri Lankan currency.
UPI Makes Travel Payments More Convenient
For Indian tourists, the ability to pay directly through UPI can simplify everyday spending by reducing the need to exchange cash for smaller transportation expenses. UPI acceptance in Sri Lanka has been expanded through cooperation between NPCI International and LankaPay, enabling Indian visitors to make payments using participating UPI apps.
The latest PickMe offer also highlights the growing role of cross-border fintech and digital payments in international travel. By combining payment convenience with discounts, the initiative could encourage greater adoption of UPI among Indian visitors while supporting Sri Lanka’s digital tourism ecosystem.
Boost for Cross-Border Digital Payments
The initiative comes as Sri Lanka continues to strengthen its digital payment infrastructure for Indian tourists. India has emerged as an important tourism market for Sri Lanka, creating an opportunity for payment platforms to provide seamless services tailored to Indian travellers.
The PickMe promotion demonstrates how UPI is expanding beyond domestic payments into international travel, offering Indian consumers a familiar payment method while helping merchants and service providers connect with a major tourist market.
