Manappuram Finance Enters a New Era as Bain Capital Brings in Professional Leadership

India’s Manappuram Finance is set for a major leadership transformation, ending its long-running family-led management structure after global investment firm Bain Capital gained joint control of the non-banking financial company (NBFC). The lender has appointed Ashish Singh as its new Managing Director and CEO, effective January 1, 2027.

Under the new structure, current MD and CEO V P Nandakumar will continue in his executive roles until December 31, 2026, before moving to the position of Non-Executive Chairman. Singh will take charge for an initial five-year term.

Ashish Singh to Lead Manappuram’s Next Growth Phase

Singh brings more than 25 years of experience in retail banking and financial services. He currently heads Retail Liabilities at IDFC FIRST Bank and has previously led its Bharat Banking business. His career also includes senior roles at Fullerton India and ICICI Bank, with experience spanning rural banking, financial inclusion and product development.

His appointment comes as Manappuram moves toward a more institutionally managed operating model following Bain Capital’s investment. Bain had committed approximately ₹4,385 crore to acquire an 18% stake on a fully diluted basis through a preferential issue of equity shares and warrants. The transaction also triggered an open offer for an additional 26% stake.

Bain’s stake could ultimately range from 18% to 41.66% on a fully diluted basis, depending on the open offer and warrant conversion. The investment agreement also gave Bain the right to nominate key members of executive management, including the CEO.

Strong Profit Growth Adds Momentum to Leadership Transition

The leadership restructuring comes at a time when Manappuram Finance is reporting strong financial performance. The company posted a consolidated net profit of ₹585 crore in the June 2026 quarter, representing a more than four-fold increase from the corresponding period, according to reports.

The transition marks a significant milestone for Manappuram, which has grown from its roots as a gold-loan business into a diversified financial services company. Bain Capital has described the partnership as part of a broader professionalisation journey aimed at improving operational efficiency, risk management and sustainable growth.

With Singh taking over the executive leadership and Nandakumar moving to a non-executive role, Manappuram will enter 2027 with a new governance structure. The key challenge for the new management will be to maintain the company’s growth momentum while strengthening risk management and expanding its diversified financial services platform.
